Can I Use Baby Yarn for Profitable Knitting Projects?
4 characteristics of baby yarn
Baby yarn is probably the 'bread and butter' of most yarn shops in North America - knitting for babies is so 'natural,' somehow, and a VERY popular activity!
But does knitting with baby yarn for profit pay?
Babies deserve beautiful hand-knitted clothing, but there are also some special considerations. There are several qualities to look for in baby yarn when you set out to knit items that you will want to sell.
FOUR CHARACTERISTICS OF BABY YARN
1. First of all, the baby yarn has to be SOFT. Some babies are allergic to wools, so some of the new acrylic yarns and 'novelty' yarns are a great substitute. Many of them are luxuriously soft to the touch - perfect for babies, all of whom have sensitive skin!
2. Baby yarn should be washable and dryable with a minimum of fuss -- after all, babies are not great at cleaning up after themselves. :-) We may want to clothe them in lovely items, but when they are, by nature, 'high maintenance,' it's a good idea to clothe them in goods made from baby yarns that can be thrown in the washer and dryer, repeatedly, without showing any significant wear!
3. Clothing for babies should be 'lightweight,' and once again, baby yarn fills the bill - it is specially designed to be lightweight. No mom wants to have to lug her 7-pound baby around in 20 pounds of blankets!
4. Baby yarn is durable - it may last through more than one baby!
In addition to these characteristics, baby yarn can also be colorful, and there is a great variety of textures and styles. Gone are the days of just pastel pink and blue baby yarn - not only can you now get a wide variety of other pastels, such as mint, pale yellow and lilac baby yarn, but today's baby yarn color range includes the bright, bold primary colors, as well.
Whether you are planning to knit baby blankets, booties, sweaters, hats or 'sleepers,' there is a suitable baby yarn for every purpose -- and profit -- today!
