FREE KNITTING PATTERNS FOR BABIES
1. One of the most popular free knitting patterns for babies is for a knit afghan, and it goes like this:
With any size needles (I prefer circular ones for this project!) and any soft baby yarn, cast on 3 stitches with a double strand of yarn. Increase one stitch at the beginning of each row until the afghan is the desired length (at least a yard), then decrease one stitch at the beginning of each row until you have only 3 stitches remaining again. Bind off, and, if you want, knit or crochet a loose border around it - in the same color, or a contrasting one.
2. There are free knitting patterns for babies hats, too. One of the easiest free knitting patterns is to cast on, with 6mm needles, 40 stitches in a nice, soft baby yarn. Do a rib stitch for half an inch, and then switch to stockinette stitch until the hat measures 4" long. Decrease across each of the next several rows until 6 stitches remain on the needles, and then break off the yarn with about one foot extra. Thread that through a yarn needle, and then thread it back through the remaining stitches, slipping them off the needle as you go. Turn the hat inside out, pull the yarn tight, and sew up the back seam.
3. Here's one of the available free knitting patterns for babies booties:
Cast on 28 sts with colored yarn, and knit 10 rows (5 ridges). Decrease as follows:
Row 11: K 12, K2tog twice, K 12 (26 sts).
Row 12, 14, 16: Knit across.
Row 13: K 11, K2tog twice, K 11 (24 sts).
Row 15: K 10, K2tog twice, K 10 (22 sts).
Make the eyelet in row 17: K1, *YO, K2tog,, repeat from * across, end K1 (22 sts).
Row 18: Knit across, knitting through back loop of all YO sts.
Cut colored yarn (leave enough length to use for sewing bottom half of bootie) and attach white; work ribbing as follows:
*K1, P1, repeat from * across row.
Work 14 rows of this, bind off, cutting yarn long enough to sew top half of bootie. Fold in half, right sides together. Sew top half with white yarn, bottom half with colored yarn. Weave in ends, turn right-side out; fold down cuff. Make second bootie the same.
