Knit Your Way into a Profitable Business

Want to knit up a new business? 4 ways to get started!

If you knit, has anyone ever said to you, "You could sell these and make money!" If you've ever thought about how you might like to turn your knitting hobby into a business, it's easier than you think. Hand knit items are in high demand, and not everyone is as capable of creating them, as you!

KNIT YOUR WAY TO PROFITS

Here are four steps to starting your knit business:

1. The first thing you need to do to start a knit business is RESEARCH. Talk to other crafters who have turned their hobby in to a business; talk to consignment stores; talk to your local yarn shop to see if there's anyone else doing what you do that you could 'interview' for more information.

2. The next thing you need to do to knit up some business for yourself is to have a PLAN. In other words, you need to think ahead to how much time you want to knit, how much money you want to make, and how you will approach it. Will you use consignment stores, or head out on the craft show circuit, or...? Will you specialize in one type of knitting, or knit a broad range of goods for sale?

There are lots of decisions to be made, and their are, of course, 'pros and cons' to each choice you'll be faced with - that's all the more reason to make sure you do a thorough job of Step 1, and do your homework first!

3. Put a professional marketing package together - you should have a business name, brochures and/or business cards, posters, a calendar of events where the buying public can find you, etc. Just being able to knit won't get you noticed as much as your marketing will.

4. Believe in yourself, and be prepared to work hard at your new business. You may have to spend hours sitting in craft shows, or 'pounding the pavement' showing your knit goods to consignment store owners - but it WILL pay off, if you have a good attitude and you're prepared to 'dig in' and spend the time it takes to build a new business.
