Knitting Bags - for Fun and Money
How to make -- and market -- knitting bags
Knitting bags are so much in demand right now, because of the hundreds of folks taking up knitting for the first time. Knitting bags are needed by every knitter, in order to make her knitting projects portable -- and what serious knitter doesn't want portable projects? :-)
Knitting bags can be made out of any material, of course, but why not knit knitting bags ... for yourself, and to sell to all those other knitters who need one? Knitting bags are easy to knit, and can be fun - here's why:
1. A knitting bag is basically a rectangle, so that means you can use it as a practice sampler for any stitch you'd like to try out, including cables.
2. Knitting bags are really quick, so you it's fun to complete two or three in a day -- make them from different textures and colors of yarn, or 'mix and match' to make really funky knitting bags!
If you're interested in making and marketing knitting bags, you can contact local yarn shops to see if they'll take them on consignment, sell them on eBay, or market them yourself -- on a website, or through craft shows or trade fairs.
Here's a really basic pattern you can adapt to create any size knitting bags:
- Knit a rectangle that's twice as large as you'd like the knitting bags to be. Use any stitch or pattern, or try out several different ones.
- Fold the rectangle in half, right sides together, and sew up the two side seams.
- Make a small rectangle with button closure to sew across the top of your knitting bags so they can be closed.
- Add an i-cord handle, or simply knit a lo-o-o-n-g, skinny rectangle in the same design, or a rib stitch; sew it onto the knitting bag as the handle.
Fill it full of knitting projects or yarn and other knitting-related stuff, and take it out to see how many knitting bags you can sell!
